Game of Thrones Branded Lager

The hit HBO original series Game of Thrones is a favourite amongst many couch potatoes. It’s got gratuitous violence and nudity and it boasts a storyline deeply entrenched in politics despite its middle ages setting.  As far as TV series go, and the numbers have proven it, Game of Thrones is a certified smash hit and now it looks primed to go one up against its competition by having its very own beer.

Yes, you read that right, Game of Thrones is getting its very own beer and it’s reportedly slated for production too in late first quarter of 2013. Just in time for Season III of the series. This however doesn’t mean that HBO is going into the brewing business just yet but it proves beyond a shadow of a doubt they’ have really mastered the marketing and branding game.

To create a ‘Game of Thrones’ beer, HBO has partnered up with Brewery Ommegang based out in Cooperstown, New York. The makers of fine Belgian Ale have conjured up a beer aptly named Iron Throne which is based on a Golden Blonde Ale.

“To being able to collaborate on a beer based on the cultural phenomenon of Game of Thrones and exploring ways to make the beer, truly reflect aspects from the show and made us approach the development in a completely new way”, said Phil Leinhart, Brewmaster at Brewery Ommegang. “With a Lannister currently on the throne, it made sense to do a delicate, but piercing Golden Blonde Ale with Noble hops.  Iron Throne is certainly fair in colour and soft in appearance, yet it still possesses a complexity and bite to be on guard for,” he added.

Fans of the series here however may need to resort to buying Iron Throne online or shipped in from overseas as the beer will only be made available in the United States at the end of March. Iron Throne will reportedly be sold in draught form and in 750ml bottles with a suggested retail price of US$8.50 per bottle. It will also be followed by the launch of additional beers later.
