Licensed to Drink

The 23rd James Bond film, Skyfall is set to open soon. We take a look at Agent 007’s long storied affair with drinks for the past 50 years

Drinking on the Job
Agent 007 loves a good cocktail. Over the course of the 22 films thus far we’ve seen the British spy throw down a number of signature cocktails such as the Vesper, the Old-Fashioned, the Negroni, the Mount Gay and the Mojito.  His ‘go-to’ cocktail however remains the Vodka Martini, which he drinks…

Shaken Not Stirred
The now famous cocktail phrase debuted in the 1962 film Dr. No when it was ordered by the lead villain himself.  It would take two years for Sean Connery to finally start the ball rolling by requesting one in Goldfinger. Bond hasn’t stopped ordering them since although Skyfall may see the agent consume something entirely different because of…

Heineken
Believe it or not, Bond slums it with the rest of us by apparently throwing back a Heineken in Skyfall. It isn’t the first time 007’s been caught with a beer, he drank one in Goldfinger too but swapping a Martini for a beer this time around was solely down to an endorsement deal that the Dutch brewers made with producers of the film. Bond fans are naturally up in arms but it wasn’t the first time their favourite fictional agent was accused of…

Selling Drinks
Bond’s fondness for drinks saw a number of product placements in the film’s franchise. Over the past 50 years, brands such as Absolut, Stoli and Finlandia have appeared on screen. Prior to the Heineken deal, Smirnoff had the bragging rights to sharing screen time with the secret agent in 1997’s Tomorrow Never Dies. But despite his love for all things alcohol, there’s one particular beverage 007 is particularly fond off and that is…

Champagne
Cliquot, Dom Perignon, Krug and Bollinger, Bond has drunk it all on film. In total, across the franchise, bubbly was the most common drink served to the British Secret Agent. He apparently consumes a grand total of 35 glasses throughout the franchise. In total though, Bond has consumed a total of over 120 alcoholic beverages, which roughly comes out to a drink every 25 minutes on film.

Skyfall opens in cinemas nationwide on 1st November
