The Wine Academy is founded by Professional Sommelier – Roderick Wong in 2011 to establish, uplift the interest of wines and bring the level of wine services to the next level.

Having 19 years of experiences since year 1993 in the wine and hospitality industry, Roderick has helped several establishments including Hilton Hotel in “The Best of Award of Excellence” – 2 Glass Award by Wine Spectator Magazine for 3 consecutive years. He is also a recipient of the Hospitality Asia Platinum Award (HAPA) “Wine Personality of the Year 2007 / 2008” and awarded the Honorary Ambassador of Wines from Spain to Malaysia by the Spanish Economic & Commercial Office (ICEX) and also the South East Asia Wine Pioneer Award in 2011. 

With his passion and the want to improve the Malaysia wine scene through education, Roderick has founded the first Sommelier Association of Malaysia (SOMLAY) since 2009 and the Hilton Wine Academy in 2007, trained over 700 Hilton team members and organized the first Hilton Sommelier Trophy in 2010.

The Wine Academy is the latest project for Roderick and he is now fully focused on developing this academy. The academy offers Sommeliers Foundation Program - an introductory program to better understand the making of wines and its history. Most importantly, it is the first step for anyone who is interested to become a sommelier to gain a better insight of what the profession of being a Sommelier entails. There is also the intermediate program that helps one to progress in learning more in depth about the wine varieties, classification and regional information for wine producing countries.

To be certified as a Sommelier, The Wine Academy is also associated with Courts of Master Sommelier in the UK, Vins D’Alsace Course and officially appointed by The Spanish Economics & Commercial Office (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior - ICEX) to provide seminar program for the Wine of Spain.

Other than training and seminars, The Wine Academy is also a source for more exploration of wine such as organising wine tours, providing consultation services to create wine list, marketing strategy, food pairings etc. The Wine Academy is also wine agent for several wineries in Spain, Italy and France which allow them to provide training to suit specific needs and recommendations according to the establishment’s requirements.

The comprehensiveness of The Wine Academy also include accessories that help one when learning about wines such as the AROMASTER Wine Aroma Collection, the Essential Wine Tasting Guide and work with an environmentally friendly wine storage brand Hauster.
