Carlsberg Malaysia announces craft beer joint-partnership

Carlsberg Malaysia, on December 14th, announced the launch of New York City’s craft Brewhouse, Brooklyn Brewery to bring two of their signature brews for the local market. This marks the seventh strategic distribution partnership of the two breweries globally after Sweden, Norway, London, Hong Kong, Lithuania and Singapore.

Brooklyn Brewery was founded in 1988 by two neighbours, Steve Hindy and Tom Potter, as a tribute to the culture and traditions of Brooklyn. The partnership was later joined by Milton Glaser. Current brewmaster Garrett Oliver came on board in 1994 and continues to develop new techniques and recipes. The brewery is ranked no. 11 amongst all craft breweries in the US and is exporting worldwide to as far as Asia and Australia.

The two brews available in bottles are the Brooklyn Lager and Brooklyn East IPA. The launch took place at MEJA Kitchen and Bar at TREC, showcased with a beer and food pairing served in small bites to the media and trade.

Brooklyn Lager at 5.2% ABV has a slight bitterness and upfront floral aroma enhanced by “dry-hopping”, a technique that steeps beer with fresh hops as it undergoes a long and cold maturation that slowly releases the aromatic feature of the hops used. “This beer is designed to go with food in Brooklyn, think about pizza and chicken wings,” said Thomas Teo, Commercial Development Manager of Craft and Specialty Department from Carlsberg Asia. Mini beef bruschetta, oven roast leg of lamb with yogurt and fried five spice chicken were served with the beer.

Brooklyn East IPA at 6.9% ABV is said to pair well with spicy food with its bright piney aroma, the taste of stone fruits and firm bitterness. Presented were spicy grilled tiger prawn, Vietnamese-style laksa and deep-fried cheese stuffed jalapeno poppers.

335ml bottles of both brews are now available in the following outlets:

  • The Brew House at SS2
  • MEJA at TREC and Sunway Velocity
  • Tavern 13 at Seksyen 13, PJ
  • Chequers at Solaris Mont Kiara
