The origin of the dry martini has been a topic of debate among aficionados for decades. Most believe it was probably a later derivative of the martinez cocktail which calls for the addition of curaçao and bitters.

Origins date back to around the the turn of the 20th century. If shaken and not stirred the drink takes the name 'Bradford'. With the addition of 2 cocktail onions instead of olives or a twist it becomes a 'Gibson'.
