Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

Thirst On Screen 8

The Drinks: Whisky and rum

The Story: In 1936, as the Nazi’s ready to march across Europe, Hitler is obsessed with the occult and has ordered his armies to find the Ark of the Covenant - a sacred chest built by the Israelites to contain the fragments of the Ten Commandments. The Ark is believed to have incredible powers – any army marching behind it would be invincible.

Archaeologist Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) is on a mission to recover the Ark for the US Government. To find where it is, he needs the headpiece of an ancient artefact called the staff of Ra.

An old flame, Marion (Karen Allen) has the piece and Indy travels to Nepal where she owns a bar in Kathmandu.

As the scene opens, Marion is seated at a table in a whisky drinking challenge against a Nepalese local. By the number of empty glasses on the table, it looks like they are several rounds in. Her opponent is clearly completely hammered but looks a hardened drinker and can take it. He knocks back yet another shot. As Marion raises her glass in return, she pauses and the raucous crowd frantically exchange bets as it looks like she is done in. But she knocks back the shot and confidently slams the glass down. Forced into another round, her opponent struggles to hold himself together and as he tries to drink, the booze takes its toll and he falls off his chair and passes out.

As Marion is clearing up, the Nazi’s turn up - they are looking for the headpiece too. As Marion is about to be tortured by the Gestapo, Indy arrives in the nick of time and there is a shoot-out. As the bullets fly, rum is pouring out of bullet holes in a barrel. Between dodging bullets and helping Indy kill the Nazis, Marion pauses to slurp from the leaking barrel. A girl who can take her drink and hates to see a drop wasted!
