Background: Located along the south coast of the revered isle of Islay along with neighbours Laphroaig and Lagavulin, Ardbeg distillery has emerged in today’s whisky world as a real force to be reckoned with. Founded in 1815, the distillery enjoyed decent success for over a century but closed in 1983. 

 

It was subsequently acquired by The Glenmorangie Company and reopened in 1990, and has gone from strength to strength since. Standard official expressions from the distillery itself like the Ardbeg 10YO, Supernova and Uigeadail have all received immense praise from the whisky community worldwide, with the Uigeadail being deemed ‘Best Whisky in the World’ in 2009 by whisky writer Jim Murray.

 

Another claim to fame for the distillery has been the special limited edition releases created since their reopening, especially vintages from 1974 like the Ardbeg Provenance, which is regarded as one of the best whiskies in the world.

 

Flavour Profile: Medium to highly peated, with notes of citrus, smoke and sea salt. Very balanced, despite the strong flavours.
