Beverage trends of 2013

Gangnam Style Vodka?

Psy had a breakout year in 2012 and is showing no sign of stopping too, especially as Gangnam fever continues around the globe. In Russia, beverage company Woobo International have apparently filed an application to produce an alcoholic beverage under the ‘Oppah Gangnam Style’ trademark. If the Russians get their way and if Psy doesn’t kick up too much of a fuss about it, we could see a Gangnam Style Vodka hitting the market in 2013.

The Pizza Beer

Believe it or not, but a Chicago brewery has managed to combine the city’s two favourite meal items into one. Developed by Tom and Athena Seefurth, the Mamma Mia! Pizza Beer has grown from being a niche brew into a highly sought after item. Initially developed in 2006 by Tom and Athena Seefurth in their home brewery in Campton Township, Illinois, the idea for the beer took root with a surplus of tomatoes and a bag of garlic. Although the idea of a Pizza Beer sounds like it could induce projectile vomiting, the sheer taste of it has garnered rave reviews and an increase in demand for the coming year.

Burst Bubbles

With Europe's economy down in the doldrums, the Champagne market has gotten a bit flat in France as well as other European markets. Vineyards have reported a drop of five percent for 2012, which amounts to about 10 million bottles. However, despite the Europeans finding fewer reasons to  pop open a bottle of bubbly, foreign markets in the U.S. as well as Asia have reported an increase in the consumption of Champagne, which industry experts expect to continue due in 2013 to the availability of cheaper bottles of fizz from smaller makers and distributors.  Heck, we’ll toast to that!

Shagadelic
Red Bull and Monster may be the leading energy drink brands in the market but UK-based Aptitude may just give them a run for their money in the coming year. That's mainly down to the fact that the energy drink maker is putting out (pun intended) a beverage that reportedly had properties that enhances the mood and vitality of consumers. Targetted at the young adult market, the aptly named Shag is formulated with ingredients such as Herb Milk Thistle, Panax Ginseng, Gingko Biloba and Rhodiola Rosea.
