Bordeaux Sake Challenge 2021

Bordeaux Sake Challenge 2021

After last year’s virtual challenge took place in London, the sake challenge by Sake Sommelier Association (SSA) will be held in Bordeaux, the heart of famous wine growing region in France.

The Sake Sommelier Association (SSA) is the first and only UK-based organisation that is solely committed to sake education and promotion around the world.

The 9th edition of Sake Challenge outside of Japan welcomes sake made by all methods and types with alcohol volume below 24 for the Sake category. This year, wine producers in Japan are invited to participate in the Japanese Wine category. It is said that these wines will be judged by French wine sommeliers invited from the most prestigious establishments in France.

There will also be Le Mini Judgment de Bordeaux, a category inspired by the 1976 Judgment of Paris, and in memory of Mr Steven Spurrier, where wine critics will be invited to assess and evaluate Japanese wines versus Bordeaux wines, on a 20 points based criteria.

The deadline for entries is 28th May 2021 and the entry fee is JP¥33000 with no limitation on the number of entries submitted. The requirements on the product are 720ml x 2 bottles per entry; a 300ml size bottle is also welcome, but 1440ml as total is requested (e.g. 300ml x 5 bottles).

Japan Life is the sake event open to the public after the competition that gives influencers and consumers the chance to taste the newly awarded sake, and experience other elements of Japanese culture. Sake breweries will be introduced during this event as well. The will be held on 26 September 2021.

The Sake Challenge is believed to present sake breweries with an opportunity to enter a new market that hopefully to connect with new customers in France and the region.
