Background: Located near the town of Port Charlotte on the West of Islay, Bruichladdich distillery was founded in 1881 by the Harvey family, who remained involved with the distillery till 1929. The distillery has had a chequered past, with long periods of closure and numerous changes of ownership (for real reasons unknown). In 2001, a consortium of private investors led by Mark Reynier purchased the distillery and it has been running continuously ever since.
Under the new ownership, Bruichladdich has been a leading distillery in the field of experimentation in whisky, a new trend which involves using different types of barrels and material in the making of whisky. This has resulted in numerous releases of whiskies using local barley and different wine casks such as Islay Barley 2004 expression and Bruichladdich Black Arts. Aside from the whisky bottled under the name Bruichladdich, the distillery also has two other brand names of whisky made in the distillery, the medium-peated Port Charlotte label and the heavily-peated Octomore, the latter holds the distinction as of 2012 for being the most peated whisky in the world. Whilst this diversification and experimentation leads to a varied portfolio, it makes it hard to pin down the ‘DNA’ of the flavour profile for Bruichladdich. Nevertheless, the brand has definitely grown in popularity since its reopening in 2001. In 2011, Bruichladdich celebrated its first significant milestone with the bottling of their first 10YO whisky from spirit made since its re-opening.
Flavour Profile:

Islay Barley 2004, Bruichladdich Black Arts, Port Charlotte (experimental bottlings): Medium Peat with notes of citrus, spices and rich notes such as toffee and brown sugar.
Octomore: Immensely peated with notes of sweet fruits.
