Product background:

Nikka comprises of 2 distilleries – Yoichi in Hokkaido and Miyagikyo in Northern Honshu. Rich and peaty whisky is produced in Yoichi, where pot stills are heated with powdered natural coal, the direct heating distillation is not even used in Scotland anymore. Miyagikyo distillery produces soft and mild malt using the fresh water from the mountain river.

Nikka was founded by Masataka Taketsuru, an organic chemistry scholar in the University of Glasgow in Scotland. Taketsuru worked in several distilleries in Scotland and gain vast knowledge about whisky distilling. He married Scottish lady Jessie Roberta "Rita" Cowan and moved back to Japan in 1920.

Taketsuru’s family owned a sake distillery dated back to 1733. To carry on the family trade in sake distilling, Teketsuru went to Scotland to study chemistry and was the first Japanese to study whisky making which he became a master blender. The distillery still produces sake even until today but Taketsuru decided to dedicate his life to whisky. 

When he returned to Japan, the owner of Kotobukiya (later became Suntori) - Shinjiro Torii hired Taketsuru as a distillery executive to help build Yamazaki Distillery. Taketsuru later left Kotobukiya in 1934 and started his own company Dainipponkaju and later changed the name to Nikka. Believing that good whisky can only be made in the Northern region, where environment  resembles the ideal whisky-making nature in Scotland, Taketsuru set up both Yoichi and Miyagikyo Distilleries up north to produce Japanese very own real whisky.
