There’s no denying the current hype surrounding Star Wars, largely brought on by Disney’s purchase of Lucasfilm a couple of months ago. There’s a new Episode VII in the works and heavily rumoured sequels and prequels being planned as well. And just to keep the Star Wars fever going, Suntory, the Japanese distributors of Pepsi, have unveiled a new drink with a motif that truly comes from a “galaxy far, far, away.”
The Pepsi Energy Cola, sold exclusively in Japan, is currently being marketed with the help from Darth Vader himself. The beverage features the Star Wars baddie on the can urging consumers to give themselves to the Dark Side.
The message however couldn’t be further from the truth. The Pepsi Energy Drink contains ingredients that will probably alienate traditional cola lovers. The beverage contains ginseng, caffeine and royal jelly extract, all of which boasts energy giving properties. A taste of the Dark Side indeed.
As cool as the marketing gimmick for the Pepsi Energy Drink is though, Suntory has been on a roll recently with numerous spin-offs and twists to its line of beverages. We can only wonder what they will think of next. But as far as the Dark Lord is concerned, he’s become one of the most commercially driven characters from the Star Wars universe, appearing in adverts for theme parks, telcos and even M&Ms.
