Company background: The Riedel brand has a long standing history, dating back to the 17th century as a glassware seller rather than the now-renowned wine glass maker. The Riedel glassware history spans over 10 generations and 250 years. A big change in the chain of the history happened at the 8th generation during the two great wars, which has shaped the model of business of Riedel glassware until now.

Claus J. Riedel, the 9th generation (1925-2004) was the founder of the theory for incorporating glass shapes on the perception of alcoholic beverages – particularly wine. Claus changed stemware from traditional coloured and cut glass to plain, unadorned, thin blown, long stemmed wine glasses. This invention has given the Riedels recognition for their sophisticated customers and museums, indeed, museums like MOMA in New York still have Riedel in their permanent collection. This can be said to be the changing point of the Riedel’s business as the brand is now associated mostly with premium wine glasses, tumblers and decanters.

Georg J. Riedel, 10th generation, expanded the family business to the US in 1979, Canada in 1992, Germany in 1996, Japan in 2000 and the UK in 2001. In 2004, Georg bought German-based companies Nachtmann and Spiegelau operating under “Riedel Glass Works” and became the largest producers of quality glass in Europe.

Starting in 1987, Georg was supported by winemaker friends Angelo Gaja, Christian Moueix, Robert Mondavi and with the endorsement of wine publications such as Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate, the Wine Spectator, Decanter Magazine, etc, Riedel gradually became the world’s leading wine glass company.
