Distillery Information: Founded in 1828, Springbank distillery is located in town of Campbeltown in the Kintyre Peninsula in the Southwest of Scotland. Once a bustling whisky town, previously named the “Whisky Capital of the World”, Campbeltown had at one time over thirty distilleries operating in it, but the town was severely hit by the Great Depression and the Prohibition that cut off legal exports of whisky to the United States of America. Today, Springbank remains one of only three distilleries in the town, along with Glen Scotia and the Glengyle distillery.
As a distillery and brand, Springbank whisky commands immense respect from the whisky world due to the high quality of whisky produced by the distillery. Old Springbank vintages are highly sought after and even till today, distillery production is always outstripped by the high demand from consumers. It was therefore puzzling when the owners, Springbank Distillers Limited, chose to adopt part-time production in 2009, meaning the distillery only operates six months a year, which has continued till the present day. Springbank distillery, like many others, have also started to experiment with their whiskies, especially with using different casks to mature whisky in. Unlike most other distilleries, though, which choose to ‘finish’ their whiskies in casks that use to contain spirits like Rum and Madeira for short periods of time (around a few months), Springbank matures its whisky for prolong periods in such casks, the prime example being the 16YO Rum Wood expression, which was matured for eight years in Rum casks, the other half in the more commonly used Bourbon barrels.
Like distilleries like Bruichladdich, Springbank also has two other brand names which are produced in the distillery too, showcasing the various styles of whisky the distillery is able to produce. The other two brands are the heavily peated Longrow and the unpeated, triple-distilled Hazelburn. Longrow, in particular, is highly sought after as well, with many of its expressions, like the 18YO, held in high regard by the whisky world.
Flavour Profile:
