The Best Sommelier of the World 2016 announced

Jon Arvid Rosengren from Sweden was awarded The Best Sommelier of the World 2016 on 19th April in Mendoza, Argentina. The 31-year-old is the 2nd Swede to have won the title succeeding Andreas Larsson in 2007. Rosengren is also the Best Sommelier of Europe 2013 after fellow Swede Mikael Söderström in 1990.

Since 1969, the competition takes place once every three years in one of the member countries of The Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (A.S.I.). The "Best Sommelier of the World" award serves as recognition in the Sommelier's world, opening doors of the best job opportunities across the world and accepting the winner into a very exclusive "club" of the best Sommeliers of the world.

60 sommeliers from all over the world gathered at the Park Hyatt Hotel in Mendoza to compete for the highest title on the first day. The number went down to 15 in the semifinals and three during the final. The three finalists were Julie Dupouy (Ireland), David Biraud (France) and Jon Arvid Rosengren.

The Sommeliers Contest Committee conceptualised and built all the tests for the competition. It is run by Gérard Basset (Best Sommelier of the World 2010) and comprises of the Best Sommeliers of the World Serge Dubs (1989), Shinya Tasaki (1995), Markus del Monego (1998), Andreas Larsson (2007) and Paolo Basso (2013).

After a stunning moment on the historic Teatro de la Independencia de Mendoza, Jon Arvid Rosengren was awarded the Best Sommelier of the World, and received the Moët & Chandon silver trophy from Benoît Gouez, Moët & Chandon’s Cellar Master.

Jon Arvid Rosengren is the 16th name engraved on the 6 litres size Moët & Chandon Methuselah silver trophy for the 3 years until the next competition. Every winner is given their very own trophy to keep, a smaller replica of the actual Moët & Chandon Jeroboam (3 litre size) silver trophy.
