The Court of Master Sommeliers

Established in England in 1977, The Court of Master Sommeliers is an internationally recognised education body for the hospitality industry that provides examinations in the wine profession.

This four levels program was brought in to Malaysia by The Wine Academy in 2011. With the increasing demand in having professionally recognised sommeliers in Malaysia, the program brought into the soil is aimed at encouraging and improving the standard of beverage knowledge and service in the hospitality industry.

In order to reach the top qualification of Master Sommelier (MS), one is required to complete all the four levels in the programme namely, Introductory Sommelier, Certified Sommelier, Advanced Sommelier* and Master Sommelier*.

Level 1: Introductory Sommelier (RM4,000)

Level 2: Advanced Sommelier (RM2,600)

Level 1 & 2: Full course (RM6,400)

The program received hype in its response that the first year of its conduct in September 2011, a total of 24 enrolments from Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Vietnam and Indonesia attended the course. The course reached a 100% pass rate for the Introductory Sommelier Examination which was never before achieved in the history of the Court of Master Sommeliers.

The second year of The Court of Sommelier Program is to be conducted by Bryan Julyan MS and Evan Goldstein MS between 1st – 10th July 2012 at The Best Western Premier Dua Hotel.

For year 2012, 22 candidates from Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Macau, China and Holland registered for both the Introductory Level and Certified Sommelier. There was a 74% passing rate of which 14 candidates passed in the Introductory Level and Certified Sommelier. Out of the 11 candidates who have registered for Certified Sommelier (including 8 who have also registered for Interductory Level and 3 resits), 3 of them passed.

* The Wine Academy only provides the first 2 level (Introductory & Certified Sommelier Level) of courses. Advanced Sommelier and Master Sommelier are only offered in UK or the USA.
