One Tall Order

One Tall Order

A few weeks ago, we reported that the Scots currently hold the bragging rights to the world’s strongest beer. Well now in addition to that they’ve also held the official world record to having the world’s largest bottle of whisky.

The Tomintoul 14-year-old single malt contains 105.3 litres of single malt goodness, which is equivalent to 150 bottles. The huge bottle was filled and sealed in late 2009 and was kept on premises at Tomintoul Distillery until it was recently shipped to Edinburgh to be one of the key exhibits of the Scotch Whisky Experience organised by the city.

Judging by the sheer size of the bottle alone, which measures almost five feet tall, it is evident that this gigantic record breaking bottle of tipple required a fair bit of planning and engineering in order to be completed.

First and foremost, the distillers had to commission a specially constructed bottle, which was able to withstand the amount of liquor that it was to be filled with. Then, a massive cork was fabricated along with an oversized label in order to complete the bottling process. Last but not least once everything was in place, Tomintoul Distillery had to find a suitable and proper way to fill the gigantic bottle up with 14-year-old single malt whisky.

Ultimately it took a total of 14 people to help fill the bottle before it was finally capped and sealed. In terms of net worth, the contents as well as the bottle are estimated to have a market value of over £5,000.

The biggest whisky bottle in the world will be on display at the Edinburgh Scotch Whisky Experience until April 2013.
