Agave WanChai was opened in 2005 for its growing success in its biggest 100% blue agave tequila selection outside of Mexico and the US. Making it a must-visit bar for tequila lovers.
The outlet imports most of its products and currently house 186 bottles of the pure spirit. Its most popular collection includes Herradura, Patron and Don Julio. One of the most expensive shot belongs to Herradura Seleccion Suprema that costs HKD550 per shot. It’s aged in American oak barrels for 49 months and was produced in 1990. The amber colour liquid has a scent of rose petal, vanilla and citrus with a cocoa-like finish. Despite the high price, at least 4 bottles of the tequila is sold in the outlet every year. The second most expensive shot is Don Julio 1942, which is HKD455 per shot.
General Manager in Agave WanChai, Gary Caldwell
Gary Caldwell, General Manager of Agave who has paid a visit to Jalisco told us that before the trip, he associated tequila with headache and hangover. His perception of the spirits was changed after seeing the culture of how it is produced and consumed. “Drinking 100% blue agave tequila doesn’t give you headache, the traditional way of taking a tequila shot definitely doesn’t involve salt and lime.”
Caldwell introduced Sangre – means “blood” in Spanish. Sangre is a Bloody Mary mix of orange, tomato, and lime juice with chili and tabasco that can be served with any brand of your selected tequila. According to Caldwell, this is a more authentic way to enjoy tequila and it is exclusive to Agave WanChai.
A highly recommended tequila infused dish Molcajete de Camaron is the signature for Agave since its first outlet in Lan Kwai Fong. Prawns are marinated and sautéed in Jose Cuervo Tequila and served in tomato sauce with cheese and cilantro. There is also a vegetarian version of the same dish where mixed vegetables are used to replace the prawns.
WanChai used to be sailors’ favourite hangout, even though the Navy ships no longer dock at Wan Chai, the district is still a popular refreshing spot for the Navies during their docking period, Agave is quite a scene to be at during this time of the year.
Useful facts: Agave WanChai is a branch from the first Agave in Lan Kwai Fong that was opened in year 2000. The latter was closed in 2010 due to the loss of space to the landlord who wanted the space back for his own use.
