Brotzeit is a franchise originating in Singapore – it has three outlets on the island republic, one in Vietnam and two in Kuala Lumpur, with the newest recently opened in Sunway.
It might be tempting to view Brotzeit as just another ‘beer ‘n’ burger’ style franchise, but that would be a mistake. Brotzeit (German for ‘bread time’, a popular Bavarian expression for a hearty meal with a few good beers) is the only all-German restaurant of this type in KL. Owner Chef Helmut is a veteran of the industry and has presided over the kitchens of several five-star hotel restaurants.
His experience and passion for the food and beer brings a welcome serving of quality. Many of the ingredients are specially flown in from Germany and the dishes are prepared as authentically as possible.
Paulaner is available at a rapidly-increasing number of drinking spots around the Klang Valley. Which is a good thing, obviously. Thirstmag's mission in life is to keep you, dear reader, informed of all developments in the wonderful world of liquid refreshment. Naturally, that meant us sampling the full suite of Paulaner beers available on tap at Brotzeit.
Compared to wine, beer is far more interesting and complex, so it would be folly to just order any beer from the menu without due consideration. So as well as tasting the food and enjoying the odd brew, our task at Brotzeit was to consider pairings. These were recommended by Chef Helmut but are absolutely not sacrosanct so please try your own combos!
You think you know your schnitzel? Think again! No soggy breadcrumbs here. We start with the zigeunerschnitzle, which is served with veggies and roast potatoes, and a lightly spiced paprika and tomato sauce. It went very well with the Original Munchner lager. The beer had just enough crispness to cut through the paprika spice after a mouthful of schnitzel. Light tasting, yet strong at 5.5% ABV.
Think you know dumplings, you dim sum-ers? The schupfnudell dish contains the traditional bready Bavarian variety, served with a salad of sun-dried tomatoes and spinach. The vinegary sharpness of the tomatoes needs to be accompanied by a strong drink. You wouldn't want your food to hide the taste of your beer would you? So our pairing this time was the Dunkel Hefe weissbier. It has the strong, slightly coarse flavour that weissbiers lean towards for me, and was not dominated by the tomatoes.
After the previous two dishes, the jagerschnitzel – another large piece of naked pork with a mushroom sauce – was a little bland. On the positive side, this left plenty of tastebud bandwidth to properly enjoy the nutty strength of the excellent Dunkel Hefe weissbier.
Turning to the desserts, the white chocolate lava cake and emperor cake both satisfied the sweet cravings. The Aftensaft beer cocktail – a weissbier with mango or banana syrup – did go well with the sweet richness of the desserts and is worth a try if you enjoy fruity, dessert-like drinks, but was a step too far for me. Don’t mess with my beer!
