Nektar Review

Nektar Review

Nektar is a quaint, warm venue tucked behind an old colonial house along Singapore’s Scotts Road. It’s a combination of Old and New World that creates a comforting environment where one can hide away from the city’s rush hour traffic. The wide wooden bar top that stretches across the venue exudes a certain charm that beckons you to stay. Pick a spot at the cosy bar area as you’ll want to have a glimpse of how your drink is made.

At Nektar, drinking is serious business and cocktails are an art form! Renowned Singapore mixologist Raveen Misra has created a drink list with an interesting line up of popular classic cocktails and some modern creations. Drinks are not pretentious; what you get are good honest cocktails made with a great deal of care. The tasty cocktails at Nektar are the result of carefully-researched drink-making techniques. The use of fresh seasonal produce and high quality spirits also adds a refined touch.

I was recommended a Manhattan made with Diplomatico 15 year old rum. The twist on this pre-Prohibition classic was well-balanced. The sweetness of both the rum and sweet vermouth worked well to create a pleasant sip that didn’t take very long to finish. To fully experience Nektar, sit at the bar and watch how your drink is made. Whether you’re a cocktail geek or just out to get a drink, you’ll definitely find the craft behind these drinks captivating. Moving on to my second cocktail, I decided to subject my palate to something rather different from what I had earlier. I ordered a Pisco Sour. As the name may have suggested, this drink is ‘sour’. However do not be fooled by its name, the Pisco Sour in Nektar is flavourful. Made from Pisco (a Peruvian brandy), sugar, egg white and freshly-squeezed lemon juice, this concoction has a velvety texture. The Pisco works pretty well to bring out the sweetness of the lemons and delivers a nutty and earthy contrast to the drink. This is one of my personal favourites!

Do not be intimidated by their selection of drinks. If you’re not sure of what to order, just get their friendly mixologist to recommend you a cocktail. Apart from the great drinks, the friendly staff makes the whole experience fulfilling. Nektar is a bar that you wouldn’t mind popping in at 4.30pm, leaving at 1am and coming back to again week after week.
