The Wok & Barrel

The Wok & Barrel

A restaurant with a daring fusion menu that is sure going to fix your craving whichever part of the world you are from. They can be quite innovative with their fusion section of the menu. Try some Nasi Lemak Sushi, 5 Spice Pork Confit, Softshell Chili Crab and their famous beef rendang.

Rokerderlig
Malaysians always miss food from home when we are working overseas. In this case, we were excited to find a place where they claim to make authentic nasi lemak and beef rendang. The thought of eating the fragrant coconut rice was alluring, even in Malaysia itself it is getting harder to find restaurant with good nasi lemak. What's more, this restaurant serves craft beers! That beats the mamak up by a notch!

It was a mid afternoon and there was only one table of 6 in the restaurant. We chose to sit outside where we could enjoy the bright sun and fresh air. We ordered the premium Swedish cider Rekorderlig, the fresh and crispiness of the drink was perfect for a sunny afternoon.

Beef Rendang

We came to try out the famous beef rending, to go with this, we ordered nasi lemak and pork bacon fritter (for a combination we know will be hard to get at home). The dishes were served together and we were very happy with the nasi lemak. It was fragrant with coconut and rice was at the perfect texture – not too sticky and not too dry. However, the sambal was a tat bit too spicy though it was not too thick and the slight citrusy taste made it very palatable.

Bacon fritter
The beef rendang was not disappointing either, the meat was tender and sauce was creamy and not too sweet. We expected crispiness from the bacon but the fritter was on the sweet side and the bacon was a bit hard to chew. We would have loved it if it was salty and crunchy, that would have paired greatly with Rekorderlig.

Puloh hitam cake and coconut ice

For dessert we had the puloh hitam cake with gula Melaka butterscotch and coconut ice and kueh baulu (sponge nuggets) tiramisu. The puloh hitam cake had a firm texture and was complimented by the butterscotch in terms of its sweetness; gula Melaka on cocnonut ice was a no brainer and was deliciously easy to eat; the tiramisu was layered with coconut whipped cream and mascarpone, it was light and fluffy with cocoa and vanilla taste.

We were satisfied with the service. The staffs knew their menu well and were efficient and alert even though they were manning both the inside and outside of the restaurant. There was once they brought the wrong flavor of Rokerderlig and when we told that to the waitress, she confirmed what we have ordered and immediately changed it for us.

We spent almost SGD100 on 3 bottles of beer, 3 dishes, 2 rice and 2 desserts. That made us think how cheap it is to live in Malaysia where you would pay less than RM15 for nasi lemak with beef rendang. Though, it will be a different experience all together, we wouldn't have had beer and pork fritter in the same menu for the same quality of nasi lemak, would we?

Other than a good range of craft beers, The Wok & Barrel has also a decent wine list to go with their food menu. They serve brunch all day long during the weekends and a menu suitable for vegans. Catering service is also available by the outlet.
