Stepping into a café or a cocktail bar these days, the arm handing over your carefully made drink will more likely than not have a tattoo of any size or style somewhere on it (or be attached to a body with several of them scattered around).
It’s this blend of two subcultures that drew Giffard to create the Spirit of Art, a platform for expression for our drinks makers to show off their skin and their skills using Giffard syrups and liqueurs. First launched to great success in the UK in 2015, the Spirit of Art spread to Singapore and Hong Kong the following year and has now made it to Kuala Lumpur (as well as Bangkok) in 2018.
Inspired by the diversity of local art culture that can be found in KL’s vibrant drinking scene, Giffard profiles 11 creative spirits to share the art of creating cocktails and drinks together with the art of tattoos. It’s a selection of very familiar faces from the local scene sharing their personal expression, stories, and passions, which includes:
- Callan Green from Jack Rose,
- Dane Tan from CPR 45 Café,
- Danny Sukau from Suzie Wong,
- David Hans from Three X Co, also the Brand Ambassador of Giffard Malaysia,
- Hong Xiang from Wake Me Up Café,
- Jason Julian from Hyde 53 M,
- Joel Gomez from The Daily Press Café,
- Karl Too from Omakase + Appreciate,
- Loco Rockerfeller from Coley Cocktail Bar,
- Samuel Mesol from The Vault,
- Shirmy Chan from 61 Monarchy.
Thirstmag – the leading drinks portal in Malaysia since 2012 – joins this project as the exclusive media partner, and handling photography and art direction. Home-grown streetwear designer Pestle & Mortar Clothing lent their iconic apparel to add a little extra local flavour to the campaign.
Portraits of the bartenders and baristas – shot by Cliff Choong at 61 Monarchy and Coffex Showroom in Kuala Lumpur – and their interviews together with photos will be uploaded one by one on Giffard’s Facebook and Instagram from 26 February to 25 March.
Also keep an eye out for a special Spirit of Art drink menu in selected bars over the month. Pay a visit and see how their drinks and stories come to life.
Promotion runs from 26 February to 25 March 2018.
